The Election Commission of India has directed the State's Chief Electoral Officer to start the spade work far the impending 8 Assembly elections likely to be held in the early part of next year.
According to information received from the office of the CEO, there is a general understanding that election for the 8 Assembly may be held on 26 February.
However a formal announcement to this effect is yet to be made.
Director cum Principal Secretary of the Election Commission of India, AN Jha who arrived here yesterday in connection with the upcoming election left today.
During his stay here Jha along with CEO DS Poonia and other officials concerned studied in detail whether the situation here is conducive for holding elections or not.
The officials also studied the possibility of holding the election so that it does not clash with the Zilla Parishad election and also not to disrupt the academic calendar of the students.
The Election Commission is likely to announce the formal date of the election once Jha's report is studied in detail.
Mention may be made here that the EC had directed that the preparation of the Electoral Roll should be completed by January 5 and the final roll will be published on February 7.The Centre had also expressed its desire to hold Manipur elections along with three other States early next year.
Meanwhile, the Manipur State Assembly has requested ail ex-MLAs and resource persons who are in.
possession of Assembly proceedings and documents for reconstruction of Assembly records.
In a statement, Assembly secretary Th Chourjit Singh said that this was necessitated as almost all the Assembly documents were completely burnt during the June 18 incident.
